The fashion icon, Marilyn Monroe, influenced a new style of fashion in the 1900's. She wore clothes that weren't commonly worn by women back then. Women wore big hats, big skirts, and blouses which covered a large amount of their body from showing skin (Alexis, 2014). In the 1950's, a new trend was starting and one of those trend setters was Marilyn. Marilyn was a trend setter because she didn't just follow the trend but actually added her own ideas, influencing the fashion. For example, Marilyn's signature style, a simple and elegant halter dress, really got other women to wear the same (Laurie Dove, 2015). She wore body hugging clothes which accentuated her body figure, wore designer brands making the designers visionary, and wore sparkly, shiny outfits with confidence not caring if she stood out from the crowd (Heather Warlick, 2012). Depending on the occasion, Marilyn's attire changed to match the event. But no matter how formal the event was, she added her own touch (Maria Pittsburg, 2012). Fashion designers also took interest in the way she dressed and sponsored her.
Marilyn, having a great body, was able to pull off all the "unusual" clothing. The tight suited clothing allowed her to embrace her figure and influenced other women to do the same. The clothing showed off her breast and butt which got her body to be called an hourglass figure. The reaction of the female audience was not positive at first. They thought her clothes were too flashy and revealing which wasn't considered modest (Lynn Crosbie, 2012). But soon enough, the trend caught on and a large amount of women dressed like Marilyn. Women were inspired to dress the way they wanted without feeling insecure.
Marilyn's fashion did not just influence the women in that period of time but also impacted the women of our time. Celebrities like Lady Gaga and Madonna got their ideas from Marilyn and other celebrities often imitate her. Just like how Marilyn expressed her personality through fashion, women today learned to do the same. Fashion is a part of who a person is and how they express themselves. Marilyn was remembered by her clothes and that proves how important fashion can be. Marilyn's confidence and courage to be different, really inspired and still influences women to dress however they want. Due to this there is a variety of styles to choose from. People are also confident enough to be able to stand out from the crowd and do it their own way.
